Really for me, it comes down to a personal preference and what you want to achieve.
I have used Big Broter -> Hobbit -> Xymon for many years. I like this for a quick and easy setup that provides some very good details. The SNMP integration using Devmon is a bit of chore to get working just right. Lately I have tried Nagio (actually tried it on and off for the last 7 years), Zenoss, Xabix and a few others I could get my hands on. I have need for some overview/ reporting stuff that Xymon would take a lot of scripting to do.
