-V doesn't buy you much. There's little likelihood a file is going to get munged unless you have a major hardware problem.
Keep in mind that the the higher compression levels gain very little in the way of added space savings, at the expense of much longer compression times. I think most people just use the default compression level (-5). I'd take a couple albums with varied content and rip them using the default level and -best (-8) and see the difference for yourself. Using --replay_gain when ripping an album to individual tracks can only calculate track gain and not album gain.
