I find Audacity quite suitable for tasks such as this, and it's as free as can be. I don't quite agree that "you get what you pay for." Society as a whole gets what it pays for, but there are other ways than retail of buying things like software development with high fixed and low variable costs. Free software can be very good indeed, like, say, SlimServer.
