FLAC is compressed like a .zip file.  The compression setting
determines how hard the processor has to work to compress it. 
Obviously the harder it works the smaller the resulting file, but it
makes encoding/compressing slower - in the case of compression level 8,
much slower for not much more space saving.

This got better in FLAC 1.1.3 and even better in the new FLAC 1.1.4. 
Level 8 is a lot faster now than it was in 1.1.2.

I don't use CDex but I'm surprised it can't tag FLACs.  It sure should
be able to.  If that's the case, I definitely won't be trying CDex.

Normalization permanently alters the files and is irreversible.  The
files no longer resemble what was on the CD.  In that case, what's the
point of lossless?  On the other hand, RG is just a tag - the audio
data is not altered.
