You may be able to get by with one or two unreadable samples, but if there are enough of them in a row, you'll get a tick. More and it will be a pop, more and it'll be a dropout.
Once EAC has progressed to "read error" or "synch error" there's nothing more it can do, and if it gets enough errors in a row, the result will be audible. Is the CD damaged? CD repair kits work well. Is the CD copy-protected? If so, expect errors every 6-12 seconds. The errors will be inaudible but ripping will take a LONG time (overnight or longer).
