mov123 decodes files using the QuickTime library and it relies on the Quicktime library to determine the file type. mov123 decodes the file into a wav or raw pcm audio stream format. This way it is a perfect decode.
The wav stream can then be re-encoded usually into lossless Flac as it will use up less network bandwidth. If you have a Slimp3 or a bandwidth restriction the wav stream can be encoded into MP3. Alac only decodes ALAC files and produces a wav audio stream.
