Ok, first of all let's ensure your tags have conformity:
in mp3tag select tools/options/tags/mpeg.
make sure all options are ticked in the Read area
make sure only ID3v2 & ID3v2.4 UTF-8 are selected in the Write options
make sure ID3v1, ID3v2 & APE are selected in the Remove options
select ok
load your entire library and select all tracks by hitting ctrl-a
right-click and select tag cut
when that's done and all tags are removed, right click and select tag
paste

this will rewrite all your mp3 tags as ID3v2.4 UTF-8 and remove any
other tag types from your files

now, scroll to one of your VA albums you're having issues with and
check the extended tags of each track (don't choose your 70 track
album) to see if any has more than one ARTIST entry. If this is the
case you need to ensure that there is an ALBUMARTIST tag added also,
that reads "Various Artists". Without the ALBUMARTIST tag set, the
track will appear as a separate album when browing by Album.
Once you've done above (and obviously rescanned) the album will appear
under Various Artists and also under each of the Artists defined to the
tracks that make up the album

For albums containing multiple artists, but with only a single Artist
tag for each track, you can simply add a COMPILATION=1 tag and SC will
treat the album as a Various Artists album

For albums that are not Various Artist albums, there is absolutely no
harm in adding COMPILATION=0 tags to their tracks.

In closing, I have a library containing over 400 compilation albums,
many of which have multiple ARTIST tags assigned to a single track, and
using the abovementioned logic, coupled with the SC settings I referred
to in my earlier post, I don't have a single compilation album
appearing more than once. That said, if I browse by Artist, the
compilation albums on which the Artist in question appears is also
listed - which is how I want it. Browsing by Album, however, only
shows a single entry for the Album in question.
