I changed the tags for one compilation album to ID3v2.4 as you described. I added the ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION tags and set them to various artists and 1. The only difference is that when I scan by album it just says various artists instead of the individual artist but it still has them grouped by the individual artist. In other words one compilation shows up as 5 separate ones all by various artists until you drill down and see that they are actually grouped by the track artist.
