Since then I've created a very small test-case music library with several compilation and non-compilation albums and think I am narrowing down where and how the problem happens. Here's what I've learned: 1. The symptom happens on 7.0 and 7.1 (I had originally though it was only after upgrade to 7.1) 2. When I browse my library by Artist, I see a single entry "Various Artists" in the listing, (as expected - I have "Group compilation albums together" set). Clicking on "Various Artists" displays all the compilation albums, again, as expected. Clicking on a compilation album in this view plays that album, with all the tracks in natural order. This is completely how I'd expect things to work, and it works OK for multi-disc compilation albums too. 3. When I browse my library by Album, I see all my albums displayed - compilation and non-compilation. If I click on a non-compilation album in this view, it plays with all the tracks in correct order. But if I click on a compilation album, this is where the problem happens. The tracks are cued for playback sorted by artist name, not track number. Here is a concrete example to try to make it clearer. I have a compilation album named "100% Acid Jazz" with 20 tracks each by a different artist. If I navigate Artists -> Various Artists -> 100% Acid Jazz -> [play], the tracks play in correct order: 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. If I navigate Albums -> 100% Acid Jazz -> [play], the tracks play in this order: 1, 17, 11, 19, 14, 3, 6, 8, etc. This weird order is in fact what you get if you sort the tracks by artist name. I don't know why this behaviour happens or how I can disable it. I have double-checked the tags in the FLAC files are correct, especially that the ALBUM name is the same in every file, and the TRACKNUMBER tags are correct.
