As you know I'm new to this tagging lark, so I'm just reporting back what I've done!
In Mp3Tag under the 'Extended Tags' there is a tag called BAND, in my case this showed 'Various Artists'! By deleting this and adding the COMPILATION=1 tag, so using suggestions by both your good self and Siduhe made, I managed to get the album listed as Various Artists under both SC7 and WMP. Interestingly after your comment, I have just checked in WMP under the Advanced Tag Editor and 'Album Artist' is still there and shows 'Various Artist', so maybe Mp3Tag treats BAND differently to 'Album Artist'! I really don't know.
