I felt better after my complaining post - cathartic.  I had enough
energy to search through "setting" on the actual Squeezebox, not
through Squeezecenter.  I found an option "delete library and rescan". 
I realized that before it was just rescanning for new and changed music.
As with all things computer, starting over will exorcise the demon. 
Everyone knows that if your computer is running slowly, or programs
hang, if you reboot the problem just goes away.  So, I deleted the
whole library and rescanned and now all my songs are back!  Really
though, my gripe is still valid.  Squeezecenter was not scanning my
files correctly - should have found new songs.
