As a squeezebox virgin, advice in
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57862 persuaded me to
buy a squeezebox classic which I have now done and setup.

My immediate reaction was that it was an absolute breeze to setup, and
I was listening to my music within minutes.

However, I can immediately also hear that the volume is not loud
enough, and sound quality is pretty poor.

The way I have ripped my CDs is as follows.

I allow Itunes to rip my CDs, and they are done in MP3 format at
160Kps. The reason I have done it this way is mainly for integration.
I went for Itunes because I can stream from simplify when out and about
on my iPhone 3G, and MP3 to give me maximum compatibility (no
proprietry formats for me, thank you very much).

However, the quality when playing through my squeezebox is virtually
unlistenable to :(

So, ideally I would not like to have to re-rip my CDs but will if
necessary. I take it the only way I am going to get decent sound
quality through my Squeezebox is ripping to lossless. What is a good
(free) program to do this, and will I be able to retain all the info I
would when ripping to MP3 (album artwork, artist etc etc)?

Also, I rate my music within iTunes, so I can rate all my favourite
songs as 5 stars and build a "favourite songs" playlist. I would want
to retain this on the squeezebox so I can have the same kind of
playlist.

At the moment I have itunes integration on so my squeezebox retains the
playlist info.

Am I going to have to rip every CD twice, once as lossless, and once
for itunes, or is there another way round this?

Sorry to rabbit on - hope I have got my message across ok, and thanks
in advance for your help.
