OK, a simple rescan fixed it. The situation is that I have my music stored on an external hard-drive networked by USB through my BT Home Hub.
The XML info for the library is stored on my laptop which is also where slimserver is stored. My squeezebox was connected wirelesly, but I have just tried plugging an ethernet cable in, and it seems to be more responsive and sounds slightly better to my ears (but may be wishful thinkining I guess).
