The reason I re-ripped was because there is (was? I never heard that it got resolved) a bug in OSX so that when using FrontRow to listen to music, you would get a message telling you that you didn't have the right to listen to a particular song. I could play it in iTunes, but if I opened up FrontRow, I wasn't allowed to listen to my music. There were quite a few other people who reported the same problem in the forums at apple.com. The only way around it was to actually rip the CD in iTunes. sigh... I've been a hater ever since.
A bit of a relief to know that I can keep stuff in either format and it won't affect fidelity when listening. I'll keep looking for something that would be smart enough to detect changes to the 'lossless' directory and transcode any changes to mp3 in another location. I'm guessing something based on rsynch under the covers might do it.
