Exactly so. For myself, what I've done about this is to add the
composer to the artist tags (both for album and track), and in the first
position, which seems to guarantee a display preference. I don't like
doing it, but it gets the display job done. It is unfortunate that if
there are more than three artists, such as a composer and two
performers, the display preference for the first position no longer
seems guaranteed.

Perhaps what the developers should consider is, first, displaying all
artists in the controller, as is done in the web interface, and second,
giving an option to display composer along with them. I wouldn't care
about which comes first if all were displayed. I only care about giving
preference to the first because, as long as only one can be displayed in
the controller, I want to control which it is.

This wouldn't be a complete solution because composers wouldn't thereby
show up in the artists list. Of course, you can turn on the existing
option for that, but then you get nonclassical composers as well as
classical. That could have the effect of adding a lot of relatively
meaningless names. Maybe the option could apply specifically to the
Classical genre.

I'm glad it's not my job to design this for the rest of the world!

Fwiw, I do add distinguishing information to the album title where
there are more than one of the same name. For example, "Symphony No. 5
(Karajan)", "Symphony No. 5 (Solte)", etc.
