I use mp3fs: http://mp3fs.sourceforge.net Essentially, I mount my FLAC directory using mp3fs, which exports the flac files as mp3 without actually creating them (so uses zero disk space). When you access the files, they are automatically transcoded to mp3. It's pretty simple to setup (linux only) and works great.
