SC is fine with images this size, and the caching routine generates the
thumbnail versions the first time they are used, so I haven't seen any
performance issues.  The only time it uses the full image is when you
hover over the now playing thumbnail and get the full image as a
callout, or when you click onto a thumbnail to get it to open it.

I embed all of mine in my FLAC files, which are transcoded into MP3 for
my iPods, and they are also happy with the size of images in the file,
presumably after iTunes has done its thing with the metadata.

I'd far rather have a high quality version of the correct cover rather
than some random download of an over-compressed, poorly framed and often
wrong version of the actual cover that an auto-downloader has found. 
Just as an example, there are 7 different versions of the cover for
AC/DC's Back in Black in common circulation, and that's about one of the
simplest cover designs you'll find!
