i use winamp to do RG for that reason, don't use -V either, and i checked the flacs with mp3tag as soon as i made them to be sure i wasn't sticking id3 tags in them, (i wasn't, so it seems unchecking id3 tag on the compression options dialog is the only place you need to do it) i also then used mp3tag to add albumartist/band tags that shared the same value.
