That's not how I read it in their WIKI:

It says that they _assign_ an album artist to every album.  When it's
decided that an album is a compilation they assign the album artist for
the album to be 'Various Artists'.

There's no mention of recognizing the 'Various Artists' string as
having any significance, but there is this:

It sounds like an ALBUMARTIST/BAND=Various Artists will cause the same
thing to happen as in Squeezebox Server - the album will be considered
a non-compilation with an album artist of 'Various Artists'.

If you still have a 'Various Artists' under V in Squeezebox Server then
you haven't yet gotten rid of all the ALBUMARTIST, ALBUM ARTIST, or BAND
tags containing that string.
