A solution that seems relatively painles is to use media monkey gold in place of songbird. This will convert your flacs to mp3 s on the iPod when you synch ( you can chose the bitrate). Mediamonkey is very reliable and the cost is small vs the purchase of a new car.... The album art handling is also easier to manage than with songbird and squeezebox in that it handles both embedded art and that in the folder.
