Quite agree, but this is where the whole industry has muddied the
waters over connectivity with so many different standards, 'protection'
systems, even cables for heaven's sake. It's caused immense problems
for me not just with this issue but even trying to listen to audio from
HD TV (without HDMI).

So, what I've found so far;

1) Car makers with Ipod connectors usually mean the car stereo can
control the Ipod (or whatever). So no need to fiddle with a separate
box whilst driving - good!
2) Media Monkey on the fly conversion (FLAC to AAC perhaps) when
transferring files from desktop to Ipod sounds a brilliant solution -
but not available for Mac OS. Wonder if that will happen or whether
Songbird will produce such a utility (several users have asked on their
development suggestions log).
3) Not sure whether Ipods etc support 24 bit files - I'll try and find
out.
4) Not sure about trying to use Rockbox. Just seems yet another
intermediate step in an already confusing jungle of operability - and
one that's bound to raise yet more issues.

Any other observations / suggestions warmly welcomed, but thanks for
the replies to date.
