I recently bought Peter Gabriel's "Courage" (the 'missing' track from
"So") from his website, as well as the album "And I'll Scratch Yours"
(covers of PG songs by various artists whose songs PG covered on
"Scratch My Back"). The only codec choices were MP3 and Apple Lossless,
so I bought the Apple Lossless versions.

Just to keep life simple, whenever I buy ALAC tracks I convert them to
FLAC using dBpoweramp, and without any problems. Until now. The FLAC
versions of the two versions of "Courage" come out mostly as
high-frequency hiss, although it is possible to barely hear the real
track underneath the hiss. I get the same result whether I play it on my
SB system or directly on my computer using foobar2000. I tried
transcoding from ALAC to WAV, and got the same result. In contrast, all
tracks on "And I'll Scratch Yours" transcoded from ALAC to FLAC just
fine with dBpoweramp.

The "Courage" files are .m4a, not .m4p, so I wouldn't think that they
were protected with DRM. Nor do I think PG would sell DRM'd stuff.

Any ideas? I guess my next step would be to try transcoding using
foobar2000 or some other software.
