No, it's not a Kodi thing, as a matter of fact almost all media center
solutions I know use these. There are also some music players that make
use of them. The NFO files store additional meta data that gets
displayed on the screen (mostly tv) while you are playing music or is
shown on the screen while browsing your album/artist/song library (as
you said, a "databased system").

Also, the Music & Artist Info plugin for LMS does the same--except it
scrapes the info (as I understand it) in real-time and does not store it
locally; it only saves artwork to a local folder.

Software that uses NFO files usually scans for existing files and uses
that info first before it scrapes online databases--which, as we all
know, are usually literally unusable for everything besides popular
music.

I have no intention of migrating from LMS, not at all. But I am trying
to build a video and music collection that stores most info locally in
formats that are platform agnostic. Tagged FLACs and mp3s are, after
all, not the answer to everything. And, looking up bios etc. on websites
is exactly what I personally want to avoid ...
