Doing so allows "regular" (i.e. ALSA-aware) applications to see and use the 
card, but at the cost of all of the advanced features (hardware MPEG support, 
timescaling, multirate mixing, etc) that Rivendell normally takes full 
advantage of.  If you're running Rivendell, you generally don't want to do this 
unless you have a very, very compelling reason to do so.
