I wonder if this isn't the same problem I had: the audio out cable from
the CD drive to the sound card wasn't connected or (later) didn't exist.
If this is the case, there is an xmms plugin (I think called
"xmms-cdread") that will read the audio data raw from the disk, process
it and output it. (This also has the added benefit that the sound
output will be filtered through any equalizer settings, unlike the
default CD Audio plugin.
