Dennis,

I really don't mind keeping our horizons open for hosting, but, at the same time, when we start advertising our organization more it will be important that we have a stable meeting location, and have it established quickly. Furthermore, this isn't an issue we should be arguing about month after month anyway.

There are other advantages to the University that we haven't mentioned yet, like the Sierra Spirit (free) bus has a stop on 9th street. I know its route isn't that extensive, but it may be a great way for people to get to campus from distant parking, or as a method of saving a small fortune worth of gas. The regular city bus stops on campus as well... but it isn't free.

I like the ideas that you've added. Each is a valuable service that we should begin providing.

I've talked with Jeff Elprin of Open Source Nevada about providing us with assistance networking with the regional open source community, as well as the community at large. They'll be a great resource for us, and are eager to aide our development. (I'll probably talk about this tonight).

Sharing speakers is a great idea! Do you have contact information for the TMCC LUG?

I'd really like more information about our infrastructure: budget concerns (if we have any), web page hosting, people who owe us money, etc. I'm blind to these matters right now, so will anyone with information please divulge it?

Thanks,

- Sebastian

Sebastian,

Thanks for the clarification of what is going on with respect to UNR,
ACM, ASUN and the rest of the alphabet soup.

Comments made earlier indicated (to me at least) that there could be
some issues. It is nice to know that they are (mostly) non-existent.

I will ask you to consider terminology other than "ultimatum," and not
totally close the door on location discussions - because the fact is:
parking at UNR during Fall & Spring sessions is still a total PITA.

With respect to issues of "community development, membership, and
networking," I agree and would also add education, training and linking
with other "*LUGS". We need to be bringing in speakers and
presentations - which can be done in conjunction with some sponsors.

On that subject - Cathy House has started a TMCC lug and may be able to
assist on a speaker or two.

It would also be nice if THNA would ever pay RLUG the $3K plus it owes,
so RLUG could afford, on its own, to pay for some speakers.

And before I get more flames from THNA folks - Several copies of the
invoice have been given to THNA over the past 3+ years, the most recent
copy was via Mark just a few months ago. (June 7 - but who's counting)
(Sorry about that particular soap box - but it bugs me a lot.)

I want to close the "where to host RLUG" chapter of our collective
lives... we have other fish to fry. So, I'll discuss our new hosting
situation -- as it has developed since last posting -- and issue an
ultimatum.

The Student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery has elected
to be our UNR proxy. They will reserve rooms for us at our request -- no
strings attached. We will have to re-negotiate this arrangement upon
election of new ACM officers. This will not be an issue.

So, the ultimatum: Since we now have a stable hosting arrangement at a
location that fulfills our requirements for both facilities and technology
(and we didn't have to sign anything), I'm going to give everyone one
month to find a new location that they think will better suit our
organization. Keep in mind that whatever location you find MUST be stable
-- we will be able to use the location for a least one year (I don't want
to jump between locations every month). After this month I don't want to
hear about hosting again! Our efforts should be focused on more pressing
issues, like community development, membership, and networking. Keep in
mind though, parking is still an issue (which reminds me... I need to
update the "getting to RLUG" page), so don't accept UNR as the ultimate
solution.

Reading the postings about UNR, it appears that the Campus location may
not the best for us long term because of:

        A. The extra strings attached
        B. The parking situation
However....

KNPB has a large meeting room in their facility on Virginia St. AND for
the early hours that RLUG meets they may be willing to work with us.

Anyone have a contact over there?

Other possibilities:

If we have any RLUG members who also belong to:
  the Elks
  the Masons
    etc.

Each of the lodge halls usually have meeting space.

Just trying to think outside our usual box(es).
