Was broadcasting this to the list *really* necessary?
Mr. Mitchell,
Was it absolutely necessary? maybe not... Did I absolutely for sure want
get the message to Josh, just in case there was a communication problem?
Why yes, yes I did.
It is perfectly reasonable to use alternative contact methods when a
communication breakdown may have occurred. However, using a public
list (despite the original advertisement thereon) is not the
appropriate avenue, regardless of the cause for which the message
rallies and the relation of same to the primary topic of discussion on
the list.
Perhaps alternative email addresses? Phone numbers (as I hope, likely
in vain, that they were exchanged on initial contact)? Other members
of the list (contacted off-list) that may be in regular contact with
the other party?
As I'm trying to coordinate this for Josh and two other people - I wanted
to know what the status is
and I'm doing this in between appointments,
during the middle of tax season
and offering to temporarily store the equipment.
So... lighten up,
Hmm. A sip of one's own kool-aid would likely be more beneficial.
I am not discouraging advertisements on the list to local, interested
parties. However, aside from the possible exception of initial contact
with the seller/giver-of-goods via the list, all communication not
directly pertinent to the list's main purpose should be carried out
off-list. It's just good etiquette. We don't really need to know who
is blowing who off or who is under what level of stress.
As a reminder to the whole list, a local section of the Lion's Club is
gathering functioning,
used computer equipment, loading it with Puppy Linux and giving the units
to local youngsters
in need.
The idea was, since this involves
A. Linux
B. The Reno metro area
Perhaps having the RENO LINUX Users Group involved, might make some
sense. Isn't that
kind of activity part of what we are supposed to be about?
Sure. If the *group* had decided that this activity was worth pursuing
after a member (or, perhaps, a non-member) came to a meeting and
pitched the concept and got buy-in from the regular members, I would
agree wholeheartedly. In fact, I would donate some of my own gear. But
as it stands, this is purely an interpersonal transaction that happens
to have been initiated via a call to interested parties on our list.
Call it what you will, and promise what you like, but I don't see any
history of *RLUG* participation in this transaction.
Dennis
PS
I 'still' have not heard back from Josh as of 4.30PM PST 2/19/2007 and have
received an email and a phone
call from the group helping the kids, asking if I had the equipment ready
to pick up! The rep of RLUG
is also hanging here, because they were told that it was folks from RLUG
who were donating.....
It's great that you're helping the kids. I applaud you for that. Just
ask the *group* the next time you'd like RLUG's reputation to "hang"
anywhere. That's common courtesy.
All due respect, of course.
Yours,
Mr. Mitchell

UNIX is simple, but it takes a genius to understand it's simplicity.
