I entered 'apt-get install latex' and got the response: Package latex is a virtual package provided by: tetex-bin 2.0.2-30sarge4 You should explicitly select one to install.
So I then typed 'apt-get install tetex-bin' and some time later It finished! Since your reply, I tried the same magic incantation with tetex-extra, and that is now installing again... How do you get to know all this stuff!! Tried to make it again, and this time it ran thro' to the end, and told me a 91 page pdf had been produced, but also *loads* of errors all the way...
