Yeah, it fell over on me a few times as well. Grumbling about incorrect automake versions and so on. I tried hacking on the autoconf/automake files a bit, but it just got worse. Eventually I got it working by re-running make -f Makefile.cvs in the toplevel directory. Your autoconf setup seems helluva complicated to me. I'm not an expert, but I've used it for quite a few of my projects, and I very seldom have trouble with it.
