This is the normal way of operation. I finally applied your patch (with a
slight change to help pkg-config find jackd if it's installed in /usr/local),
and it seems to be working fine.

It's mostly because we have several different possible configurations (artsd,
alsa, jack ladspa). Basically, autoconf/automake will remain all nice and
silent as long as you keep under the 'normal' set of operations. If you try
something just a tad bit exotic with it, all hell breaks loose.
