Same audio segment, no previews.

Select, drag toward edge.

It's moving at about one pixel at a time, with little spurts. The segment is
flashing rapidly between its normal color and the selection color, and there
are two distinct regions of color which are cycling in opposition to each
other. Little green grid lines are flashing on and off as part of this cycle
too. All this light show nonsense seems to be what's slowing everything
down. Once I sit here long enough for it to wind up, it does eventually jump
about one bar per jolt, in between conniption fits, but the fits eat up a lot
of time, and the scrolling is very slow and jerky.

OK, now a big MIDI segment (still no previews.) Same thing exactly, but with
the added bonus that in this region there are neighboring segments with
visible labels. The labels are flashing on and off, in opposition to one of
the regions of the dragged segment. Left side goes dark, neighboring labels
flash off. Left side goes light, neighboring labels flash on. This
phenomenon right here is slowing everything down so badly that I never get
into anything even vaguely resebling the fast-scroll mode. It's crawling
along, flashing all this stuff somewhere around 5-10 times for every pixel
that the canvas eventually scrolls.

Turning the labels off helped quite a bit, but getting rid of the labels is a
cop out. The underlying problem seems to be really inefficient drawing
dragging everything down. I'm not sure if there's actually anything new
about the "light show." It could simply be that the new drawing methods are
the culprit, doing the same thing as always but dramatically more slowly.

Now that I think about it, Mom's digital camera has a video mode. I could do
some 10-second MPEGs if you want. There's no way you could see this and
think everything is A-OK, so I presume it must look a lot better on your box.
Especially since I know you don't drink booze. :)
