I haven't done anything with notation in some months. I can't seem to figure
out if this is me changing a setting somewhere, or if it's a result of
switching to a newer distro. I'm running Ubuntu Studio/Feisty at the moment,
LilyPond 2.10, which is newer than I was using. (I'll try again later with
Studio..to Go!, and maybe this will be what knocks me off the fence as to
which one I want as my daily user.)

It used to be that the track label got printed to the left of the first staff
on the page, like

            ---------
            ---------
Eb Horn I   ---------
            ---------
            ---------

However, that is no longer happening.

I've got some other horrible problems too. If I print via the preview dialog,
my printer will run itself out of paper printing light gray (5%) rectangles
that contain gibberish like this:

ERROR NAME;
        invalidfont
COMMAND;
        StartData
OPERAND STACK;
        64176
        --nametype--

Some PostScript problem I gather, but curiously, if I render to LilyPond and
use KPDF or KGhostView to print the resulting .PDF file (as created by
default when running "lilypond file.ly" with no other options) manually, I
don't have this problem at all. It seems to be tied to printing .PS files.

Other oddness, the lilypond-print-preview script (or whatever it's real name
is) no longer provides a status dialog to inform me that it's doing
something. There is simply a pregnant pause, and then the preview comes up
in KGhostView. Maybe I'm missing some helper app, and it simply fails to
complain. I misremember how that works.

I'll explore what I can do to improve my printing problems. I don't think
Rosegarden is at fault per se here, but since I am having problems with the
standard .PS rendering, maybe there should be an option to use PDF as the
destination format, and let LilyPond do the conversion. It seems to be
working flawlessly for me, except for the issue in the subject line of this
message.

This isn't actually the first time I've experienced weirdness with
Rosegarden's direct preview-to-print system. In previous versions of all
actors involved, I've run into problems with the music printing using the
wrong glyphs. Everything would come out with a whole note, plus whatever
stems and flags. Printing via .PDF solved that problem back then too.

Sounds like the problem might be KGhostView and/or CUPS and/or this printer's
PostScript emulation implementation. I'm totally open to suggestions from
any printing gurus. I'm using the PPD from the manufacturer, incidentally.
I don't *think* my CUPS config has changed at all from my old distro
installation, though the version is surely newer. The test pages are nicer
looking now.

It's a Brother HL-4170DN if anyone cares, although I doubt that matters much.

Anyway, the one thing here that isn't specifically just my problem alone is
the staff label issue, unless that's specifically just my problem alone too,
due to printing weirdness, but I don't think so, because they aren't showing
up in the on-screen previews either.
