You're right to suggest I need to rely more on method and less on intuition. Stepping back, method confirms what intuition suspected. CompositionView is the culprit. It's just a question of exactly which change or changes bring about the behavior, and the only way to sift through that is to make changes line by line or hunk by hunk instead of revision by revision.
