I've looked at this a bit more, it seems like the file being written to is ~/.xsession-errors

I'm wondering if the problem is happening because Rosegarden is writing a lot of stuff to stderr whenever segments are created/destroyed.

Confirmed with iotop. There is a lot of write activity, and I guess my hard disk makes less noise than I thought.
