Thanks for that. Although it didn't fix the problem, it did get me in the right place for the fix. In the same window you pointed me to, the option of caps/numb lock was switched on. I switched it off and magic - fixed. I certainly had not set that option so it is a bit odd how it came to be set. Now if only I could find why the networking has broken. Thanks again.
