I agree with this.  And I trust that this is what will happen... unless new 
information suggests a better path.

That the right thing will happen seems likely enough, either way.  We could 
recommend MathML directly, but I don't think that's necessary.  (I don't think 
that any existing alternative will meet the requirements as we've laid them 
out, but maybe we'll get a <LaTeX> element in browsers that will be vastly 
superior.)
