The good is the content pages

the bad navigation to find them. The download, bideo tutorials, guides, and plugins links are less obvious than the advertising links to kiwi syslog

the ugly, the site has a lot of stuff on it around the content, which makes it hard to see what's what (and is bad on small screens). some of the advertisements are setup in a way that doesn't make it obvious that it's an ad. As I look at the page right now, the add at the top of the page, it text larger than the orange rsyslog menu bar says

_I_ had to look at it a couple times to realize that it was an ad, not part of the site.

what to change

At the risk of making things more cluttered, I think the main page should have

A list of the most recent releases, being links to the changelog.

If there is recent (say within the last month), significant non-release news, it should be at the top of the page.

The remainder of the main page should ideally be a varient of the 'octopus diagram' showing all the modules (I would add the mm modules above the center rsyslog core box) with all the modules being links to the doc page for that module, and the core rsyslog box being a link to an index page that covers all the other topic (a small version of this diagram should be on every other page as a button to link back to this main page.

the Professional Services box should also list custom modules


We need to go back to basics and think about this main page, with the question in mind, why do we have it?

what are people looking for when they hit this page? what do we want them to do?

Think advertising and landing page types of things. What makes a visit to the main page succesful (for us and for the user)

I think that there are two main reasons for people to hit the main rsyslog.com page

1. they don't know what rsyslog can do, but they've been told to look at it.

2. they have a problem and are looking for help.


For the first group, the octopus diagram is a great 'in your face' way of showing that rsyslog does _lots_ of stuff and isn't the traditional syslog.

for the second group, this will make it really easy for them to get to module config info (which is a lot of what they are looking for)

Feedback including suggestions on how a new site should look like would of
course be extremely useful. Often, it is not obvious how something that is
considered bad could be done better. If we don't have a smart idea of how
to improve things, we either do changes that do not really help -- or do no
changes at all (this has happened often enough in the past).

Feedback is deeply appreciated. Also, if you'd like to contribute to
improving the site, just let us know to gain the proper access permissions.
