IMHO VxWorks is an excellent product, highly performant and highly
configurable, with a rich API and a comprehensive set of very good and
useful tools. However, you don't get the source code and it's *not*
cheap! Mind you, the manuals are good for blocking-in doorways, or
building your own office (:-). Being very rich and configurable can make
it daunting to get started but it's usually worth it. I believe VxWorks
is a very good yardstick by which to measure other RTOSs.

Commercial, proprietary code is always vulnerable to company buy-out and
obsolescence. Wind River Systems have themselves bought Integrated
Systems which *may* well mean the end of another very good RTOS, pSOS.
What's to say WRS aren't similarly vulnerable? Whereas Real Time Linux
is open source...

Just my 4 penny-worth,

Trevor.
