Hi, I think you can use different databases without any problem, just set it in the database.yaml file. I think this is the only settings you need, but it's wise to check the application.rb file, if any other smart settings are available.
For hardcoding SQL use this tutorial: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/active_record_querying.html and check the API first!
