After using RVM with ruby 1.8.6, try also doing gem installs with lower versions of the gems you're installing.
If macports is giving u trouble, uninstall macports<http://guide.macports.org/chunked/installing.macports.uninstalling.html>. Install Homebrew <http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/>.
