It was VERY interesting to see the many options for ballast. I've been using bird grit. It looks like crushed granite. Buy it at your local pet, bird, or farm supply store.
I checked the size of real ballast on the Water Level Route. It was 1-4" diameter, most of it 2-3" diameter. That is 1/64" - 4/64" in 1/64th scale. Find a bag that has the right size.
