Subject: {S-Scale List} foam scenery
What about vertical surfaces, in particular,

KEITH:
While all track is Gargraves and all flanges are humungeous, the
Famous-Barr Christmas layout in St. Louis was made entirely using foam
board...........the flatlands and the mountains. Too bad as you'd have to
wait until next T-Day to see it and then go to St. Louis. The foam board,
incidentally, is set upon a plywood superstructure and fits together similar
to a 3-D jigsaw puzzle.
For mountains, we just layered one slab on top of another, glued them
with Liquid Nails, and inserted 12d nails to temporarily hold the layers
together. The nails were not later removed. {:-) Once the footprint is
established, you just keep adding horizontal pieces until the desired height
is achieved. Then, using any instrument of your choice, sculpt the rock face
into the vertical side. We found drywall saws very useful. Once we had
mountains and rock faces sculpted, we filled the horizontal depressions with
joint compound. Also, with experience, we learned that it ain't a bad idea
to coat the entire surface with joint compound. This helps with painting.
