Subject: SR 11-rib low side gon kit shipping soon
This is an advance notice of a new resin kit about to be released: the
Southern 11-rib low side steel gon. I'm producing this kit exclusively
for the Southern Ry. Historical Association and it will be available
ONLY from that organization for the first couple of months. After the
membership has had the opportunity to purchase (at a discount from
retail price), the kits will likely be offered thru dealers.
You do not have to be a member to buy the kit but you can only get them
from the Association (go to their web site at www.srha.net). Here are
the details:
1. In 1945, Pullman's Bessemer Alabama shop rebuilt 1500 of these
1924-built cars from 9-rib/slab end configuration to 11-rib,
Dreadnaught end arrangement. The same brake gear, including a staff
brake, and Andrews trucks were refurbished and reused. Stenciling was
the basic RR Roman (with "Southernized" styling) on black paint. In
1968, approximately 600 of these cars were rebuilt again, primarily by
replacing side and floor sheets. Capacity was reduced by only 1 cubic
foot! Cars were painted brown and stenciled in large, white block font
styling. These cars were seen all over the country, especially on the
east coast, Mid-Atlantic states and Northeast. If you're modeling
non-Southern lines, these cars would be applicable from 1945 to ca.
1973 in revenue service. For Southern lines, until the early 90s in
MOW
service.
2. Models will be offered in RR Roman lettering with Tichy Andrews
trucks, metal wheels, screws, brass wire, Kadees, 1-pc urethane body,
separate urethane underframe, steel weight, ALPS decals, Tichy details.
Lettering is applicable from 1945 into the early/mid 1960s. Available
in 1-, 3- and 6-packs.
3. Models will be offered in Block font lettering with Tichy
Bettendorf trucks, metal wheels, etc. Lettering represents revenue and
MOW appearance from 1968 thru the early/mid 1990s.
4. O scale versions will follow in about 2 months. These will be
available from SMMW and your dealers upon release; they are not
exclusives to SRHA but they will act as a "dealer".
All patterns were created using 3D CAD/Solid Modeling and rapid
prototyping techniques. Modelers who've seen/purchased the Silverside
gon and CG ventilated boxcar in HO and SR flat/composite gon kits in O
scale, you already know what this new kit will look like. All rivets
are identical, perfectly aligned, and to scale. If a detail was on the
prototye, it's on the model. There is NO comparison to resin kits made
using traditional, hand-generated patterns and the price is less than a
traditional "hand pattern" resin kit (about $43 including trucks,
couplers and decals). What a deal!
I will have the 1945-era pilot model painted and decaled later this
week; web pix will be posted soon after. The 1968-era model will
follow in the next week. Once pix are posted, I'll let y'all know.
Get your order into the SRHA as soon as possible (you can order now).
A kit sample was shown during the Brosnan Forest SRHA convention 2
weeks
ago and prepaid orders have being placed. While this is not expected
to be a limited run item, inventory can be depleted rapidly during the
"first release" and re-orders might take a little while to fill. Don't
be left out by delaying your order.
