All,
Just thought I would make some comments regarding the Greg Elems post.

1. Few list members post. I can only speak for myself. I generally only post
something that I think will contribute positively to the discussion at hand. I
try to avoid "me too" posts. A number of members have considerable more
expertise than myself regarding prototype operations. I leave it to them to
educate the rest of us.

2. Lack of modern models (e.g. SD-40). I think Greg's analysis is correct.
Modeler surveys continue to show the majority are interested in the
steam-diesel transition period. Thus, the perception that the S market will
not support modern models. The AM SD-60 seems to have done pretty well, but
other modern models (e.g. AM tank/hopper cars) seem to be perennially in "sale
mode", suggesting a weak market for modern models in S. Our club's show layout
operations tend to parallel those expressed by Bob Werre. We like to run
modern trains, too. The younger folks seem to like them. That being said, I
would probably purchase several SD-40 models, if a product was available in the
$200-300 range. But, I leave it to the manufacturers to decide how to invest
their product development capital.

Also, I would enthusiastically encourage those trying to develop new S
products, whether it be transition or modern. It is a LONG, energy-sapping
process!
