24" can be great, especially when combined with a lighting valance---creating a 
kind of shadow box effect.This directs and focuses viewing and with some 
creative lighting can be very dramatic. I also find that this works best with a 
layout depth of around 24"---of course this depends on your layout and room 
conditions. I find this is very effective on around the wall layout 
configurations. I use area above lighting valance as storage for rr stuff. and 
have a 24" high backdrop (1/8"painted masonite) 4x8 foot sheets cut in half 
lengthwise. a 1 foot deep light box valance above. And about 42"
average layout height . This leaves ample storage, workbench/desk space and 
shelving below layout
