I've been listening to the comments on the future of S scale and
would like, as a newcomer, to offer some observations.
I'd like to start by telling you why I switched to S scale. Like
anything else, I would not have switched if I was satisfied with what
I was doing. Being a longtime HO guy with a not so secret desire to
model in O scale, I tore out my HO layout on a quest for something
different. I tried every scale available except S, and wound up in
O. Physical realities made it clear that O was not practical. What
to do? One thing kept coming back to haunt me...that S scale ad on
the inside cover of RMC. Every month for years I looked over that ad
and scratched my head. So why didn't I think of trying S with all
the other scales in my "discovery" phase? I have no idea. I just
didn't. When I finally got around to it, I discovered it to be an
ideal size. I did have to adjust what I wanted to accomplish because
of available equipment (something I didn't have to do in other
scales), but I think it was a good choice.
Once having committed, I've found a good deal more than I expected.
Good quality merchandise from cooperative and friendly suppliers.
This is going to be fun. If it wasn't for the much cursed internet
sellers, I would never have even tried it. The internet is the
savior of model railroading, especially S, not the downfall. How do
we replace the hobby shop when it comes to modeling supplies? For
the most part try your local Home Depot. They don't have everything
the hobby shop had, but then again, they have a good deal that the
hobby shop didn't have. We just have to learn to be innovative and
try different ways of doing things. It's a fact of life. Make the
best of it.
