one in your basement.
Like anything else imperfect man designs, the products of his
imagination are even more imperfect (witness the Titanic), including
railroad locomotives.
The "fireman's" job, in addition to relieving the engineer on certain
occasions, ranging from as minor as "Roll Call", or as major as
becoming incapacitated, was to keep minor glitches enroute from
becoming major problems. Eliminating them was, to a degree, the same
as leaving one nail out of a shoe on a cavalryman's horse, and I
believe you are familiar with that!
As a former locomotive engineer who began as a "fireman", I can tell
you all about that. How would you like it if you're employer
considered you a scourge because you were doing your job.
"Featherbedder", indeed!
