Hi Bill,
Please don't flame. Only responding to what Bill's "Where do you draw
the line" posted for general informaton to all.
As a moderator in another group and living within 10 miles from Yahoo, I
was invited to the Yahoo complex for an interview discussing groups. Their
input to me on this subject was it was not to be used as blatant advertising
for businesses, but announcements by businesses and individuals within the
community, listing a few things for sale was fine with them. They understood
that too many restrictions and group members would disappear. There interest
in groups is the advertising for yahoo. They understood, that to keep group
members coming back was imperative to them. The more hits, the better. The
agreement is how they can remove what you stated below without recourse and
don't think they won't do it. Most reported problems of that nature are
removed within 2 hours after being reported. You may also lose all your
Yahoo email addresses attached to the ISP address as well.
With that in mind, it is fine to allow those posts with business
announcements and members listing some personal items for sale. Just don't
abuse the group. Nobody has been doing that here. My only comment would be
to create a new post and put for sale or announcement in the subject line
and for all to add there email address or phone number to receive replies to
their posting. If they don't want to do that, don't post or get restricted
by the moderator. You really don't want that to happen, having your post
waiting for a week for a moderator approval. Group owners and moderators
have 14 days to approve a post before it is automatically removed. I have
seen posts delayed intentionally by moderators. I belong to over 30 groups
but receive emails on 10 of them. Lucky me, only 4 of them are very active
and this is one of them. LOL

The prohibition regarding sales is not a group rule. Instead, it is a
Yahoo rule. In Terms of Service, Item 6, Yahoo states:
> You agree to not use the Service to:
>
> g. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any
> unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials,
> "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any
> other form of solicitation, except in those areas (such as shopping)
> that are designated for such purpose (please read our complete Spam
> Policy);
This is a complex issue, and there are no easy answers. What one
person says is spam, another person welcomes as promoting a product he
wants to buy.
I myself don't mind commercial announcements of products, because S
scalers don't have very many ways of finding out what's available.
However, this list is intended for a discussion of S scale. By
subscribing to it, I don't believe I agreed to receive postings of
used stuff for sale. (That is the purpose of other groups, magazine
classified ads, online auction sites, etc.) The good thing is that
such solicitations haven't gotten to the point of being annoying.
Where do you draw the line?
