With all due respect Yahoo does NOT prohibit group messages offering
merchandise wanted or for sale. "Item 6" prohibits "unsolicited or
unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, 'junk mail,' 'spam,'
'chain letters,' and 'pyramid schemes'", but there's nothing in
Yahoo's Terms of Service, "Item 6" or otherwise, that prohibits
members offering to sell merchandise. In fact, "Item 6" explicitly
PERMITS offers of items for sale "in those areas (such as shopping)
that are designated for such purpose".
If you don't believe it, do a search for Yahoo groups whose name or
description includes the term YARDSALE, and you'll get a list of 334
different groups. Click on the group "Va_yardsale", for example, and
you'll see the group describes as follows: "Don't want to pay those
auction fees? This is the website for you!". That group has been
around since 2005.
Or check out the HOYARDSALE (HO Train Yard Sale) site, with 1290
Members, described as follows: "This group serves as a free market for
all who wish to sell or buy HO scale items...There will be absolutely
no links to "pay" sites like eBay permitted here."
A group owner, of course, can make any rules he/she wishes --
including permitting or forbidding messages about items for sale, but
that's not a Yahoo requirement.
Whether its a good idea or not for this particular group to encourage
items-for-sale messages is a matter on which I have no preference --
whatever the owner wants to do is fine with me.
