Hi Ed --
As with all generalizations, this one has its faults. I have had several 8
drivered steamers that did not pull as well as one unit of my essentially AM
F's. I still have a few -- the Omni 2-8-0 and the GS4, but my USRA 2-8-2
didn't do well in pulling either (I traded it away). My 0-8-0 and 2-8-4
are about equal to my F's (single unit). I have to be honest -- I have not
gotten into reballasting any of the steamers for max traction, so there
could be some improvement in the future, but I will still give the edge to
the diesel unit. FYI, my SP 2-10-2 barely hauls 16 cars up 2%, where my
F's each will pull at least 20 and they each weigh very slightly less than a
steamer....
Have fun stirring the pot!

Has anyone, besides myself, noticed that a diesel with eight powered wheels
pulls less than a steamer with eight powered wheels and with the same weight
as the diesel? Why would that be? Try it and see if it is true. Having
fun....Ed L.
